Introduction To Auschwitz-birkenau

Located at Oswiecim in Poland, Auschwitz-Birkenau was the largest of the concentration camps of World War II. Established in mid-1940, by 1942 it had become the biggest death camp under the Nazis. It is estimated that between 1.1 and 1.5 million victims died here.
Throughout its existence it functioned as a concentration camp. Initially, the inhabitants were Poles who had been part of the Polish intelligentsia, as well as other political, spiritual and important figures.
However, as the war progressed, prisoners from other occupied countries began arriving at the camp. According to figures from the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial and Museum which now stands on the site, around 400,000 people were kept in the camp at one time.
Of these, 200,000 were Jews, 140,000 were Poles, and around 20,000 were Gypsies from various countries. In addition, there were approximately 10,000 Soviet prisoners of war and 10,000 prisoners of other nationalities.
It is estimated that around 50 per cent of these registered prisoners died from starvation, exhaustion, disease, inhuman living conditions, torture or criminal medical experiments.
Structure
At its peak, the camp comprised three parts. The oldest, Auschwitz I, was constructed in the buildings of pre-war Polish barracks and housed between 15,000 and 20,000 inmates.
Auschwitz II, the second camp at Birkenau, held over 90,000 prisoners in 1944 and was the largest part of the complex. The majority of the mass exterminations took place here.
The third part, Auschwitz III, was made up of some 40 sub-camps in the area. This part held 10,000 prisoners.
Gas Chambers
There were a number of gas chambers and crematoriums around the complex where Jews, Gypsies and prisoners of war were gassed and then cremated. When Auschwitz-Birkenau began functioning as an extermination camp in early 1942, hundreds of thousands of prisoners were killed here without being registered.
They were taken straight from the trains and brought to the gas chambers F selection procedures targeted those who were considered unfit to work, including the infirm or elderly and children and pregnant women.
The camp was liberated in January 1945 by Red Army soldiers and the few thousand remaining prisoners were set free. Today, a museum and memorial mark its site.
How to get there
The memorial is accessible from Krakow hostels; the city is located just 60 kilometres from the camp, making it the gateway to Auschwitz-Birkenau.

Napa Wine Tasting Tours - Make The Most Out Of Your Vacation

Napa wine tasting tours are one of the most prestigious yet simple delights you can experience while visiting California. Napa valley is known for its luscious and fresh stretch of grapevine farms, which produce among the most exquisite wines in the market. To help market these products, wine tasting tours are being offered in Napa Valley wherein guests and tourists are given the chance to know more about the farms and get some first-hand experience with tasting freshly fermented wines.
Planning Your Own Napa Valley Wine Tasting Tour
1. Research about the possible lodging accommodations in Napa Valley.
You can either go online or visit your local travel agent to give you useful advice on this. There are some lodging sites in Napa Valley which are wine farms themselves, so from there you can already experience an authentic wine tasting treat. By visiting your travel agent, not only do you get the chance to know of must-see places in Napa Valley but you might also avail of discounted travel packages specially if you travel off-season.
2. Car Rental
Think about the fact that you are taking in alcohol throughout your wine tasting tour. This being said, it is always better to rent a car throughout your stay there or at least a car driver who can accompany you during the trip. If you wanted to save up on this, you and your companion/s can designate a car driver as you cruise along the Napa Valley farms. One thing is for sure though, there are not too many public rides in Napa Valley so do not forget making transportation arrangements.
3. Go Off Season
If you wanted to have the best experience in Napa Wine tasting tours, you better do it off season. If you go there otherwise, you may find yourself crowding it with other tourists who come in groups. Off season often happens from September until November.
Joining Napa Wine Tasting Tours
Of course if you wanted to save yourself the effort of planning your own trip, you can always avail of travel packages. Discounted fees may be available in group trips which would already include everything you need: tickets, lodging, and transportation while in Napa Valley. The best thing about going on group tours is that you can get exposed to a wide variety of activities. More than just visiting places such as Kenwood and Glen Ellen, you can also get access to wine bazaars and food & wine pairing events.
However, be mindful of schedules if you come to Napa wine tasting tours through a travel package. You cannot be late and you do not really hold your own time. You may also spend just a limited amount of time in one place so make the most out of it.

How To Enjoy Your Napa Valley Wine Tour

There are lots of ways in which you can enjoy a Napa Valley winery tour. Keep in mind that this experience does not always happen so it's good to enjoy it to the fullest as you are finally able to get it. So how do you exactly get to enjoy a Napa Valley winery tour? Here are a few ways you can refer to:
Although the prospect of arranging your own tour seems too tempting to miss out on, that option might be a good idea to do if you are coming back in the region for another time already. But if it's your first time to do so, it will be best if you sign up for a local tour first wherein you would have to go in a group. Don't think of it as a limited experience, because you can also gain a lot of new friends in the process. If you go on a group Napa Valley winery tour, you can pick up lots of important tips from your tour guide plus you can also gain access to special places which you may not reach on your own.
Do your research
After signing up for a group tour, don't just rest on your belly and let the tour unfold before you on the day itself. Keep in mind that each tour you might be able to experience will have its own golden history behind it. More than just looking forward to what drinks you will be submerging in, it would also be a good idea to understand the process that goes behind pouring those exquisite wines into each bottle.
Take lots of pictures
Do not let yourself get too caught up with the possibility of drinking. Take as much pictures as you can during the trip. While the whole experience may turn out to be too overwhelming at first, make time to become a shutterbug as well and let your camera document every inch of detail you can take pictures of in every trip you will be in.
Food and wine pairing
This is one of the most popular activities observed in a Napa Valley wine tour. However, this may not always come during the tour itself but may be experienced during meal times. Take advantage of the restaurants in the region by asking for house specialties which usually come with its own wine. Pairings are done so that your taste buds can get the full benefit of tasting wine and having it is a not-to-be-missed food partner.
Purchase a few bottles
If there is a particular wine which you can't seem to get enough of, do not hesitate to buy one. Aside from being a support to the tourism in the region even further, you will also find that some of the wines available in the Napa Valley wine tour are less expensive as they are sold out in the regular grocery store or your nearer local market back home. Plus, sellers in Napa Valley will also give you the liberty to taste their wine before you decide to buy it.

Andorra Skiing Gets New Vote Of Confidence

As ski resorts face the coming ski season with some trepidation given the economic downturn, Andorra has been successful in having two of her resorts named in a leading ski internet site's top ten - something which might help Andorra win a bigger share of the European ski market this year.
The good news for the Andorra resorts comes firstly because of Arinsal.
Arinsal topped the poll and won because, with some sixty per cent of British skiers fitting in the novice category, the Andorra ski holidays resort is perfect for them. Away from top class skiers, the whole village atmosphere makes for happy new skiers - and happy new skiers are likely to continue skiing in future years, boosting the ski holidays industry not just in Andorra but with other resorts too.
As well as friendly ski slopes, Arinsal has a good mix of accommodation. Hotels are from hostel standard to four and five star luxury, while there is self catering too with aparthotels, privately available apartments by the week, and the occasional chalet too. Arinsal offers ski instruction in either groups or on an individual basis from novice to advanced, to complete the ski holidays scene.
The second piece of good news for Andorra is that a second resort also makes the ski holidays travel sites' top ten - an accolade in itself.
They place Pas de la Casa at number four of its top ten ski holiday areas and praise the Andorra resort for its low prices, adding 'The happy hours, discos, lively cafes and restaurants also give the Andorran resort of Pas de la Casa its reputation as one of the liveliest resorts in the mountains.'
Pas de la Casa is Andorra's highest ski resort, and consequently has the earliest and deepest snow, with well known Soldeu at a slightly lower altitude.
Andorra started to develop her ski resorts for tourists back in the 1980's. For the first decade Andorra decided to go for the budget skier, and was able to provide ski holidays at a lot less cost than neighbouring France, and other ski countries in Europe including Austria and Switzerland.
But now Andorra has moved away from the image of the poor man's Switzerland for skiing to one that is pretty upmarket, with ski resorts such as Soldeu, Arinsal, Pal and Pas de la Casa attracting serious skieres to her slopes as well as novices. In Soldeu for example there is a good choice of Andorra hotels - including four and five star ones, while spa hotels are dotted around the country.
And while the skiing fraternity might be a bit more upmarket with money to match, so are the new residents who move to Andorra to live there full time and take up residency in Andorra.
While Andorra property averaged between three and hundred thousand Euros a few years ago to new residents, the average now is closer to double that. Not because Andorra has seen her property prices rise that much necessarily, although it is true to say it has risen close to fifty per cent in the three years preceeding the current worldwide recession, but because more and more people are choosing Andorra over Monaco as a tax haven.

Sites To See In Rome, Italy

Taking a vacation trip to the wonderful city of Rome can be the experience of a lifetime. It allows the visitor to feel like they are walking through history and experiencing a marvelous new culture. Rome, Italy may even be your destination of choice for honeymoon travel. Here's several key spots that will highlight any person's trip to Rome.
Another spectacular site to see is of course the gorgeous Vatican which showcases the beautiful Sistine Chapel. It is recommended that prior to you heading to Rome you try to arrange a private guided tour for this site. The tour guide will be a local who's familiar with the history and can give you all sorts of great stories about the beautiful statues, paintings, sculptures and other items within the Vatican. A hired guide can also get you to the front of the long line you will be met with when waiting to get in. If you're lucky, the Pope may be around, on a Sunday if you're visiting the Vatican. This site will of course be well known by faithful religious visitors and those who have read the popular Da Vinci Code book by Dan Brown.
One spot many people may not know or visit in Rome is the "Boca de la Verdad" or "The Mouth of Truth". This is a simple stone statue housed in a small hall like room near a church. The legend has it that visitors must stick a hand inside the gaping open mouth of the round face statue. If you leave Rome with one less hand, it likely means you are a liar!
On one day during your trip you can take in both the Spanish Steps and the Trevi Fountain. The Spanish Steps will be located right near the fountain and are a splendid site to behold. The fountain itself is a gorgeous site on a sunny day and conveys a feeling of peace and harmony, no matter how much of a crowd is gathered around it. The legend here is to sit on the fountain and toss a coin over your back so you will make another trip someday to the wonderful city of Rome!

Trek The Inca Trail To Machu Picchu F What You Need To Know

Machu Picchu, the so called CLost City of the IncasD, has become a classic Csee before you dieD sight since it was rediscovered at the beginning of the 20th century by the American explorer Hiram Bingham. It is an unforgettable place F a set of excellently preserved Inca ruins perched on top of a mountain in the middle of the Peruvian Andes.
Sound exciting? It can be the trip of a lifetime, but if you are considering the trek to Machu Picchu, here are four things to be aware of5
Book ahead
In recent years, the Peruvian government has imposed tight restrictions on Inca trail treks in an attempt to lessen damage and erosion of the route and ease overcrowding. Only five hundred people (including porters and guides) are allowed to begin the trail each day, and you are required to book a permit to walk there. This means you typically need to book a place several months in advance, especially if you intend to trek the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu in peak season (between June and August.)
Get in shape
While it is only a four-day trek, the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu is quite physically demanding, with high altitude passes and long days of hard walking. You donBt need to be a hugely experienced trekker to walk the Inca Trail, but some trekking experience and a decent general level of fitness are recommended.
When they try and trek the Inca Trail, far too many travellers fly straight in to Cusco from Lima and immediately start the trail. This can be a serious mistake, as Cusco itself is at over 3000m, and the trail itself goes even higher. Make sure you give yourself plenty of time to acclimatise to the altitude. If you are flying straight into Cusco, it is a good idea to spend a little time at a lower altitude to give your body a chance to adjust, perhaps by taking a tour of the Sacred Valley before your Inca Trail trek.
Take the right equipment
Any reputable tour company will be able to provide you with a list of equipment, and some may even offer to rent equipment to you. As a bare minimum, you need some broken in hiking boots (trainers are not recommended!), several layers of warm clothing, a waterproof jacket or poncho, water bottle, good quality sleeping bag, and daytime trekking clothes. You may also want to take a pair of trekking poles F the stone staircases on the Inca Trail can be hard work on your knees!
Tip the porters
When you trek the Inca Trail, it is likely that most, if not all, of the camping and cooking equipment will be carried by local porters (pack animals are now banned from the trail). The treatment of the porters varies from company to company F some are well paid and well looked after, while others are definitely not. ThatBs another reason to go with a reputable company, who are committed to responsible tourism and have an established policies and practices regarding porter care.
Interact with your porter as much as possible (bringing some coca leaves as gifts is a good way to show your appreciation), and keep an eye on how the porters are treated F make a complaint after the trip if you feel that they have been hard done by.
Make sure that you bring some money to tip the porters at the end of your Inca Trail trek. The amount that you should tip varies with the quality of service, of course, but it is generally recommended that you bring between S25 - S35 in dollars or soles to cover the tips for your cook, guide and personal porter.

The Best For Your Vacation

When you wish to make your next vacation the significant one, you should follow the beaten path to Florida. Here the peninsula extends endlessly, offering recognition for everybody who is seeking to douse up sun. From shelter to crowded, you will surely watch something that you like. One of the Florida's distant islands is the Keys.
The excellent way to greet your coastline undergoing is to chasm in your very own condominium, lodge, or cabin by the sea. Holiday rentals were natural for those who want to vacation by the ocean, as privacy, amity, and seclusion go together with the gentle trade winds and cool sound of waves looking to appease you to sleep. Nothing in comparison with spiraling out the light, near the windows open, and reclining upon your veranda with your face turned up to the stars.
When you are smart, you will leave your mainframe and bustle bowed off when you waste time morning run along sideline, sense novels, and walking via the polish with your feet bare. A seashore house will assign you to make the chosen way back and forward from a home to ocean in the wink of an eye that is why anywhere you finish settling down you will not need to think about the gas rate. This is very funny and wonders for the glory of view.

A Honeymoon Is Amsterdam

DonBt be deceived by its intoxicated backpackers and drug-clad coffee shops; Amsterdam offers far more than some rowdy itinerants might suggest. Intrinsic charms and an enchanting culture pervade the NetherlandBs capital city; brimming with romantic canals, fabulous art galleries, and enchanting historical buildings, Amsterdam is truly a honeymoonerBs delight.
Once we had recovered from the jet lag (little over a day), we commenced our trip with a charming 5-hour boat and bike tour. (Since we had honeymooned in spring, these special tours were still being offered). We spent the first few hours biking around town, exploring famous sites like Dam Square and the Anne Frank House (which we would later revisit). Bike riding was a pleasant surprise and, as our guide informed us, is apparently the quintessential Dutch experience. We would proceed to use bikes for the duration of the trip.
We then relocated to the tourBs more relaxing latter half: the boat tour, which traversed the city through its network of beautiful 17th century canals. A highlight of our honeymoon, I found the boat tour captured the cityBs placid, romantic nature. We meandered along AmsterdamBs calm waters, enjoying optimum views of the cityBs charming edifices and bridges. The tour ended in verdant Vondel Park where Elliott surprised me with decadent chocolate, a bottle of champagne, and several warm kisses.
We rented canal bikes, and pedaled through the waterways; visited Anne FrankBs House as well as the inspiring Van Gough museum; and enjoyed the perfumed air of AmsterdamBs vibrant Bloemenmarkt (flower market). We lent our evenings to the cityBs steamier side, roaming the Red Light District and even indulging in a coffee shop or two.
For five days and four nights, Elliot and I were engulfed by the cityBs undeniable charm. It would be unfortunate to discount such a magical city because of any word-of-mouth fabrication; romance certain abounds in this quaint yet bustling city. It really is a fabulous destination to celebrate your vows.

Welcome To Rhodes,greece

Rhodes, the largest of the Dodecanese Island, is found at the southeastern border of the archipelago. It is the meeting point of three continents. It is situated at the junction of two major sea routes of the Mediterranean, between the Aegean Sea and the coast of Middle East, also Cyprus and Egypt. This island in the Aegean Sea is only about 9-10 kilometers away from the coasts of Asia Minor
The islandBs surface area covers 1,398 square kilometers. Most of it is hills and low mountains, majority of which are covered with forests. Its natural resources are an attraction to tourists, making Rhodes not only one of the largest islands in Greek but also one of the most beautiful.
Rhodes is also known as the Island of Roses because the rock-rose in the island is so fertile. Indian Summer In Seattle

When other areas of the good ole USA are preparing for winter, Seattle is enjoying what they lovingly call Indian Summer. What this means it is the calm before the winter rains and/or snow and the weather can be clear, crisp and clean.
Pike Place Market is also absolutely free unless of course you buy some of the wonderful food, including salmon. Talking about salmon, don't miss the salmon tossing contests and all of the other entertainment that abounds in this area, there are street musicians, vendors and performers, that are playing in many areas of the market and all for your enjoyment and loving it if you leave a gratuity.
For some additional history right there by the market is the original Starbuck's Coffee and all of this is close enough to downtown Seattle to do some restaurant hopping or shopping. Seattle is also know for their happy hour specials and you can sample some of the best cuisine of the city for the price of a drink, during their happy hours specials.
Outdoor sports abound in and around Lake Washington, Green Lake and other marvelous parks in and around Seattle, and then there is things to do that require you taking your wallet out, but that is only if you feel like it really isn't vacation unless you spend some money.
You can even stay in downtown Seattle for $31-86.00 per night at a hostel called the Green Tortoise, included in that price is free Wi-Fi, continental breakfast and free dinner on three nights during the week. What a deal for the thrifty traveler, and if you have never stayed in a hostel, you can even add adventurer to your travel memoirs.
