South Central Connecticut: Castles And Submarines

Drive through the country side of South Central Connecticut. The country is very rolling, with many field stone fences. In East Haddam is St StephenBs Episcopal Church, which has a bell dating from 815 A.D. It is said to be the worldBs oldest church bell still in use. The Spanish monastery, from which it comes, was destroyed by Napoleon and the bell was salvaged. It arrived here on a shipload of metal and found a home in this parish church to toll again.
Also overlooking the river is the Gillette Castle. Built between 1914 and 1919, this building built entirely of fieldstone (six million on the property) is an example of the post Victorian Movement, reminiscent of the Prairie School of Chicago. William Gillette (no relation to Gillette Safety Razor Company), once a neighbor of Mark Twain in Hartford, ignored the wishes of his father and became an actor. During his career he wrote and stared in over twenty plays, most notably bringing the role of Sherlock Holmes to the stage. Around the turn of the century he was earning over $200,000 per year. He fell in love with the overlook of the river, which he called the Seventh Sister and proceeded to build this home. Consisting of 24 rooms, the house contains many ingenious inventions thought up by Gillette. Every door and lock is of a different design. He had a special lock on his liquor cabinet that even Albert Einstein or Mark Twain could not figure out how to open. He would silently laugh at them by viewing their frustrations in strategically placed mirrors. He had a small scaled railroad erected on his grounds with over three miles of track, including trestles and a hundred yard tunnel. The house itself has undergone extensive reconstruction and has now reopened to much of its former glory. At five dollars per person it is a bargain to see the tribute of William Gillette. Did I mention the view? Overlooking the Connecticut River and the surrounding countryside, you can see the small ferry crossing the River with passengers and cars.
Old Saybrook is at the tip of the Connecticut River and Long Island Sound. Once the home of Yale University before it moved to New Haven, it is now a quiet community. In the memorial park are the remnants of an old train roundhouse, a building in which maintenance was performed on the engines. A boardwalk leads out to an estuary and marsh lands with a description of the flora and fauna found there. An interesting plaque gives the history of the Pequot Wars. The tale told that the Pequot started the war with the British and the British finished it off. Is there a third side to the story?
Across the river is Old Lyme, purported to be the home of many ship captains. There is no map designating the historical homes. The locals claim that the town residents want to live in anonymity and keep the tourists away. On the Northern edge of town is Florence Griswold Museum with a collection of American Impressionists. Adjacent is an art academy and museum, which accepts tourists. Today Lyme has the dubious distinction of being the name of Lyme disease carried by the deer tick. There goes anonymity.
Further East is Groton, the home of the USS Nautilus, the first nuclear submarine, launched in 1954. She and her crew were the first ones to sail under the North Pole. Audio guided tours are available for free aboard the sub. She is the only nuclear submarine on display in the world. Groton is also the home of the Coast Guard Academy.
On the grounds is the submarine museum, with displays of submarines used since Bushnell invented the Turtle during the revolutionary war. Hand propelled he drove the sub into New York Harbor to blow up the English ship Eagle, but was unable to attach the charges. The museum has many hands on displays on life in a submarine, from the attack room, the conning tower with periscope, torpedo room, sonar and radar. Outside are one man and two man subs used by Italy, Japan, and other countries in war.

Some features you might consider standard in a moderately-priced hotel chain, such as min-refrigerators in each room, cost extra. If your Disney stay is a short one, perhaps the "budget" motel atmosphere of Disney's value tier resorts won't mater that much. For a longer stay, or a nicer one irregardless of length, you might be better off staying at a moderate-tier resort. There are five to choose from. If you'd rather not stay at a Disney resort at all, there is a strip of motels and hotels in Kissimmee on the Irlo Bronson Memorial Highway. You can pick and choose there, or use a hotel chain's "stay points" if you have them. Magic Castle Inn and Suites is nearer the parks, and also offers free transportation to and from the Disney theme parks. However, for nearly the same price, a Disney value tier hotel will get you a bit more in the way of Disney "magic".
Dining: Every traveler knows that after getting there and staying there, eating while you're there is a big bulk of your vacation budget, irregardless of the destination. Disney does try to help its guest trim the costs of their food budgets by offering Dining Plans. The simplest one entitles every one in your guest party to two quick-service meals and 2 snacks a day. Quick service meals are offered in "fast-food" type or buffet style settings throughout the theme parks and resorts. The grandest way to eat on a Disney Dining package is the Deluxe Dining package. That one gets you 3 meals a day, your choice of table setting or quick service, along with your two snacks. Several "tip" guides reveal that the dining plans are good if you and your family are big eaters. For picky preschoolers, chronic dieters or those who just don't eat a lot may want to opt for other dining arrangements, as the portions provided in the dining plans tend to be large.
Entertainment and Recreation: Not all of the entertainment happens within the grounds of the various parks. Many of the resorts offer bicycle, boat and water sport rentals. At Port Orleans resorts you can hire a horse-drawn carriage. Several of the Disney resorts offer fishing holes, where you can use an old-fashioned cane pole and drop a line in the water. (NO trophies to take home, though, as Disney fishing is all catch and release.) Each Disney resort from the moderate tier on up offers walking/jogging trails, hot tubs, and other outdoor recreation opportunities. Some of these come at cost. Others don't. Of course, even the value tier resorts have pools and playgrounds. Take a ride on the monorail or water taxi/ferry boat for nothing at all. Watch the water parade float by from the beach at Fort Wilderness resort. Or catch the evening show at your resort's lounge. Orlando and the surrounding area offer a great many possibilities for keeping yourself occupied, outside of the mouse's houses. The Magersfontein Anglo Boer War Battlefield Site In South Africa.

In the predawn light of Monday 11 December 1899, Major General Andrew Wauchope led his men of Highlanders on a dawn attack of the Boer positions who were believed to be entrenched somewhere ahead amongst the hills of Magersfontein. The memorials are often hundreds of yards apart and more or less indicate the position where most men of a particular regiment fell.
Looking back north towards the Magersfontein hills, one wonders what went through the minds of the men that took part in the battle that pre-dawn morning. The hills look ominous in the distance, almost as if sheltering a great dragon that spits flames in the form of bullets and cannon fire.

This is home to a palm tree-lined promenade, a fashionable marina surrounded by upmarket cafes and restaurants - and the seafront houses many of its new four and five star hotels - there is also a new medina again, housing many little souks, gift shops and cafes where the locals tend to meet up after work!
Next to the medina, thereBs a theme park called CarthageLand, which is great for the kids, with many water-rides, etc.
Further along the coast you will find the popular resort of Port el Kantaoui - mainly known for its stylish marina and again many nice upmarket hotels, this has been a firm favourite with holiday makers for years. A ten minute stroll from here brings you to Sousse, which I believe is the largest tourist resort in Tunisia. I visited Sousse years ago F itBs very nice - again a lovely beach and an old walled medina, which is home to the market here, where you can pick up locally-produced goods such as leather items, pots, ceramics and even local delicacies.
Sousse is also the busiest resort, so if youBre looking for a bit of hustle and bustle then this is the resort for you, as it has a busy town with many shops, bars and restaurants, catering for both locals and tourists alike.
Skanes and Monastir are the other two main resorts, located just 5 minutes from Monastir airport - you tend to find the cheapest accommodation in these resorts - I would say these are most popular with families, due to the close proximity with the airport, as some of the other resorts can be over an hour away.
IBve spoken to a lot of people about holidays to Tunisia and the main response is CNo I donBt fancy TunisiaD. My advice is donBt knock it until youBve tried it! Of all the places IBve ever been, this is my favourite. The weather is lovely, thereBs a lot to see and do, the food is good and the people are just lovely.

The widows had died and so she was the only one who knew where the treasure was hidden. One day she was accosted by two men mad with leprosy, who wanted the treasure so that they could leave Miramichi. After beating her, one drew his sword and beheaded her. They threw the head into the river and left the body to rot on the bridge. No one has yet found the treasure and it is rumored that Sister Marie, the headless nun, haunts the area watching over the lost treasure.

So Much To Do In Albuquerque, New Mexico

Albuquerque, New MexicoBs largest city, was founded in 1660 with land grants to more than 100 Spanish families from the Duke of Albuquerque. Today it is one of the Jewels of the Land of Enchantment.
Three viewing sections are available to the visitor. The most popular area is Boca Negra Canyon. This area is run by the city and there is a slight admission charge, if someone is at the gate. Three trails of varying lengths of five to fifteen minutes let the visitor view hundreds of these petroglyphs. Some of the designs are the human form, shaman, various animals of the area, and geometric designs. Watch out for rattlesnakes and keep on the trails.
One mile south of the visitor center is Rinconada Canyon, which features a two and a half-mile round trip through the rocks. This trail is not paved.
Further north is Piedras Marcadas Canyon with more petroglyphs.
There is no fee at the National Monument and the hikes are self guided. Booklets about the trails and the petroglyphs can be purchased at the visitor center.
Fourteen miles north of Petroglyph National Monument is Coronado State Monument. This is located on Rte 550 just outside of Bernalillo. The State Park commemorates two important occurrences. First is the Pueblo of Kuanua, begun in the 1300s. The 1500s formed over 1,200 rooms in buildings up to four stories high. Entrance was through the roof of these adobe homes. They were used as storage areas, kitchens, and general living quarters. The building were built around open courtyards, in which were sunken kivas. The kivas served as ceremonial chambers, almost like sweathouses. Here the men could have visions and dreams. Some of the kivas were round and others square. They were decorated with many pictographs, painting on the walls, depicting the life of the people and their dependence upon the elements, especially rain. Some of these pictographs can be seen in the visitor center.
The Kuauans were both hunter-gatherers and farmers raising the three sisters (corn, beans, and squash). Located by the Rio Grande River, the site was perfect for irrigation.
In 1540 and event happened which changed the life of the Kuaua people. An army of Spanish soldiers, led by Francisco Vasquez de Coronado, encamped near Kuaua. Their purpose was to find the seven cities of gold, of which rumors abounded. Instead they commandeered the pueblo and made the Kuaua pay tribute to the Spanish Government. They had to give fifty percent of their produce to the government. The friars reeducated the natives and demanded labor from them, and eventually took the children to be raised as good Spanish Citizens. They undermined the stability of the pueblo and essentially destroyed its function.
In 1680s the Natives revolted from 100 years of oppression. Natives from many of the Pueblos in New Mexico rose up and attacked the settlers, the churches, and the soldier garrisons. They drove the Spanish back to El Paso. The settlers and ranchers did not return for twelve years. Most probably this is when the Kuaua Pueblo was abandoned.
One good aspect did emerge from the Pueblo Revolts. The Spanish policy of forced labor or poorly paid labor was changed. No longer were the Native subjected to this form of almost slave labor. This had a great effect on the treatment of the Natives in the San Antonio, Texas Missions and other missions, which were formed.
Today Coronado State Park preserves and celebrates these events. The kiva is under reconstruction. Walkways with kiosks describe the life of the pueblo and of the people. Many of the foundations are visible. The staff is very friendly and informative.
Travel east on Rte 550 and it changes into Rte 165. Drive through Placitas and up Mount Sandia. The road changes from nicely paved to gravel. It is closed in the winter because of snow and flooding water. Unfortunately, signs said the road was closed. Why go there? Up in to mountains is perhaps the oldest dated cave settlement in North America. More than 27,000 years ago man hunted the Wooly Mammoth in the Sandia Mountains. There are no human remains, but the artifacts found in the cave have been carbon dated. A small parking lot is at the ten-minute walk trailhead. This leads to Sandia Man Cave. Bring a flashlight. There are also some tight squeezes in the cave itself.
Visit the New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science for a great experience. The emphasis is on the evolution of the earth and life on the planet. Great exhibits on the development of dinosaurs. Some of the movies are breath taking. The animation is top rate. Experience CA Bad Day in the CretaceousD, a video animation of a 10 K meteor which struck the earth near the Yucatan Peninsula. The crater is still there today. The resulting fires and devastation wipes out 75% of wildlife on the planet. It marked the end of the Cretaceous era. Also take a six-minute ride in the time travel machine, which takes you back 75 million years where present-day New Mexico stood. Other exhibits include gemstones, caving experiences (dry cave, wet cave, and live in a cave). Many interactive exhibits keep the visitor invested in the information. Also available at the museum for an additional fee are a planetarium and a Dynamax theater with different movies. Spend at least two hours in the museum to see the primary exhibits.
A short distance away is the Turquoise Museum. This is another little gem. This museum shows everything you ever wanted to know about turquoise. How it is formed. Where it is mined. How to tell the different qualities and value of turquoise. You will spend about one hour to see the museum. It also contains a lapidary workshop with all of the tools to cut, polish, and grade the stone. The exhibit includes stones from all over the world. When you leave the museum, the exit is into a flower shop, which is behind the turquoise store. You can purchase beautiful turquoise jewelry too.
Twenty-five miles North East is the final little gem of the day before we get to the giant gem. This is Tinkertown. This museum displays the life work of Ross J. Ward, a master carver. While we were watching television he carves a complete Western Town and a circus with a big top and a side show alley. Pushing a button animates many of the pieces. What makes Tinkertown such a pleasure is the humor Ward put into each piece. He has signs with corny sayings, people doing unusual things, and just living life in the old West. He has one display of the undertaker: CBe nice to the undertaker. He is the last one to let you downD. This is complete with horse drawn hearse and devils and angels flying in the sky. One final oddity about the museum is the surrounding walls: glass bottles held together with mortar (interesting).
Now to the Giant Gem: Sandia Crest. Sandia Crest overlooks Albuquerque at an elevation of 10,678. Albuquerque stands at 5,000 feet. There are two major ways of getting to the top. First is the Sandia Peak Aerial Tramway, one of the worldBs longest ones at 2.7 miles in length. During the month of April maintenance work keeps it closed. The other way up the mountain is drive, bicycle, or hike. We chose to drive the mountain on a paved road. The road ascends almost six thousand feet within fourteen miles. The temperature in Albuquerque at that time was 79` F and 49` F at the summit with a stiff breeze. Even in late April, there was snow on the ground. Almost felt like I was back in Chicago. The views are breath taking. At the top of the mountain are a souvenir store and a small restaurant.
The old town section is quite nice. San Felipe de Neri has been the cornerstone of the plaza since 1706. Homes, shops and restaurants built around the plaza with narrow streets. In the center of the plaza is a gazebo and two replica canons from the Civil War days guard the plaza.
The Albuquerque Museum of Art and History is two blocks from old town. The museum features permanent and traveling exhibits. The permanent exhibit includes 400 years of history in the area. The temporary exhibit was on the Alvarado Hotel in Albuquerque, which was a premier Harvey House in its day.
Nearby is the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center. The center features a museum with Display cases for many of the different pueblos. Each one has representations of their arts and crafts and a history of the pueblo people. On weekends, in the courtyard, native dancers demonstrate some of their dances. The center has an extensive store and a restaurant.
The AAA Book says that the Rio Grande Zoo in Albuquerque is a little gem. They are understating the fact. The zoo is a precious jewel, not to be missed. The layout is user friendly with many benches on which to rest. The animals seem to be well cared for. The landscaping is marvelous. The zoo is definitely five stars. The animals must be somewhat happy even in their confinement, because the white rhinos were putting on an adult show for us. A docent said that they had good luck with reproduction at the zoo. The lions, tigers, and other great cats were doing their cat like thing: napping. Many exhibits also include water animals. Sometimes I wondered if I was in an aquarium rather than a zoo.
